Fishing and Diving from Whakatane

The owners and crew of the fishing and diving charter boat "Phantom" would like to extend a warm welcome you to when you visit Whakatane.

Top fishing correspondents have rated the surrounding waters, as New Zealand's best all round fishing destinations, as New Zealand's best all round fishing destination. Phantom Charters have the experience and knowledge to provide all the requirements for a successful trip.

Whakatane inshore waters have a wide range of fishing opportunities with the main species available being snapper, tarakihi and kahawai (sea trout). There are large areas of reef where large snapper can be targeted in shallow water. These reef areas make excellent dive sites and have good populations of reef fish and crayfish. In the deeper water hapuka, gemfish, bass, bluenose and deepwater tarakihi are available. During the summer months marlin and tuna frequent the offshore waters.

The reefs around White Island are world famous for producing trophy kingfish with many fish in excess of 20kg. Diving around White is spectacular due to the usually clear water with visibility often in excess of 30m. The underwater geography is unique and varied with sheer pinnacles rising from the depths almost to the surface. The geography along with teeming fish life and bubbling underwater vents make this a world class dive site.
